Get to Know your Regent Team | Jay Schwartz

This quarter's Featured Employee is Jay Schwartz, Managing Director of Quality Assurance at Regent Education. Jay joined the Regent team in July 2014 and is based out of our Frederick, MD office. Originally hailing from Baltimore, MD, he moved to Frederick in 1997 with his wife and two daughters.

Q: What was your background before Regent?

A: I've been in software development in excess of 20 years. Prior to Regent I worked for UMUC and Laureate Education as the Director of Quality Assurance. Before entering the higher education space I worked in the software development sector with companies throughout Baltimore, Washington and Virginia. I had heard some very positive things about Regent, and it gave me the opportunity to get back to the software development side, while also leveraging my higher education experience. Our software is truly unique, and the commitment to quality has made my work both exciting and rewarding. We recently invested in a state of the art quality assurance product that will further our abilities in testing of software before it is released to clients.

Q: What’s the toughest part about your job?

A: Probably the most challenging aspect of my job in the beginning was the sharp learning curve on financial aid specific knowledge. We work with some of the most advanced schools in the country with highly complex processes, so I had to quickly expand my financial aid knowledge. The work to understand financial aid thoroughly has really paid off, and I continue to keep up to date on regulatory changes and the changing business processes utilized by our schools.

Q: What do you like to do for fun?

A: I became an avid runner years ago so definitely running is a big part. I've run a couple marathons and half marathons. I'm also a Sports fan, I like the Tennessee Titans and the Orioles. I became a Titans fan in the late 70s when they were the Houston Oilers. And then of course my family, I have a wife and two girls. My two girls are 13 and 10 and they keep me extremely busy.

Q: What’s a fun fact about yourself?

A: Several years ago I caught Cal Ripken's grand slam. I have a video tape and the ball, he signed it and everything. It's pretty cool, I think he's only hit 8 grand slams in his career and I caught one of them.

Q: What do you like best about the work you do at Regent?

A: I think it's that Regent is a growing company and when you're at a small growing company, everything you do contributes to the success. That to me is a big deal. I also enjoy the flexibility of our product, allowing different features to be integrated into the software based on the school’s individual needs.  This flexibility enables our customers to be competitive and meet the needs of their students. The work that I do has a direct impact on their success-and although that can make my work somewhat stressful, it also makes it rewarding.

Q: How does your role help customers successfully use Regent products?

A: I think quality is everything as well as the quality of the product that we deliver. If it's not up to par or has too many issues in it, the clients’ success with Regent 8 is hindered. And quality is bigger than just my group or me, it's the company as a whole, no matter the intake process of how customer information is pulled in as well as the output.  The addition of a QA team and the new software tools are a reflection of our commitment to quality, and these tools give me the ability to drive client success and take quality to a new level.
